The Biggest Loser Welcomes American Idol’s Ruben Studdard

It was just announced this week that American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard will be joining the season 15 contestants on The Biggest Loser. Ruben states that he wants to get back on track with his health after winning American Idol in 2003. He has struggled with his weight through the years, dropping 70lbs after Idol, but again putting the weight back on after his marriage fell apart in late 2011. Ruben has weighed as much as 455lbs and was nicknamed the “velvet teddy bear.” This will be the first time NBC’s The Biggest Loser will have a celebrity participating on the show. The new season of The Biggest Loser premieres on October 8th.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that it’s a good thing that Ruben is going to be learning how to get healthy and change his life for the better? Should celebrities be able to compete on The Biggest Loser?

  1. I thing that having a celebrity will probably entice a larger audience. I wish him lots of luck with his weight loss and quest for health.

  2. It will be interesting to see how they do this. Will he be just like the others or will he be treated differently?

  3. I have several friends who have been BL contestants on past seasons. If the production follows its past pattern, Ruben will be treated just like any other contestant as far as workouts, chore lists, telephone restrictions, etc. I do think he will likely receive more camera time than a less notable contestant. BL cast him in the season to benefit their ratings, just as they choose all contestants. I certainly wish him the best. It can be a tremendous experience or a wild ride.
