This week is the 4th of July, and with it comes many holiday races. I will be running the Watermelon 5k here in Orlando through Track Shack. It’s a favorite of mine, because not only do I get to dress up in red, white and blue, but I get to enjoy a fun run with friends.
Florida Hospital sponsors the Watermelon 5k each Independence Day in support of our military veterans. The event gives military personnel and their dependents a $10 discount and a special bib for the race. All participants get to enjoy a post-race party with ice-cold watermelon. There is also a watermelon eating contest and a kids run. Everyone registered receives a gender-specific tech tank top.
The event holds a food drive collecting non-perishable food items for the Orlando VA Medical Center’s VSO Food Pantry. Track Shack hopes to collect at least 1000 food items on race morning! Everyone is highly encouraged to bring cans and other food items with them.
If you are a Central Florida local, there’s still time to sign up for the race. Head over to Track Shack to register and join in the fun! You can sign up right up till race morning on site.
If you aren’t local, there’s likely a 4th of July event in your area. A good place to check is http://runningintheusa.com/ as well as with your local running store. Or, you can do your own virtual run through organizations like Virtual Races for Charity or U.S. Road Running.
