On Saturday, April 28th, I ran the annual Run for the Trees 5k in Winter Park. I had never done this race before and I’m so glad that I decided to sign up for it. It’s definitely one of my favorite 5ks now, more so because I PR’ed!
Originally, I had planned to bike down to the race since it was so close, but my back had been complaining a bit the night before and I didn’t want to overdo it and have issues as I was running the race. So, I drove down to Showalter Field and arrived about 30 minutes prior to the race start.
After the usual pre-race stop at the ladies room, I headed to the starting line. I talked to a couple other runners while we waited for the starting gun to go off. Then, we were off. I was keeping a good pace right off, I hit mile one at 12:13 and it only got better from there.
By mile two, I was under that 12 minute per mile mark at 11:55. I was definitely pleased with that. I felt good too, no problems whatsoever. My new playlist was keeping me pumped and moving.
As I entered the private nature preserve that is only opened for this race event, I took it all in as I kept moving wanting to keep my pace under 12 minutes if I could. It was different running on dirt, as I’m so used to running on pavement or sidewalks. It felt pretty good though, a lot softer on my feet.
I crossed the finish line at 37:26 with a smile on my face. It felt really good to not only PR, but to finish in under 38 minutes, which is what I was hoping to finish under or just at for this race. I really enjoyed this 5k, it’s definitely one of my favorites now. I will be doing it again next year.
