Jan 17th & 18th Prompts

One-Minute Writer Prompts

January 18th – Parent
If you are a parent, how did you feel when you first found out you’d become one?
If you’re not a parent, how do you think you’d feel if you got that news?

Well, considering that I am not a parent, the second portion of this prompt applies to me. How do I think I’d feel if I discovered I was a new parent? If I was married and trying to get pregnant, I’d feel great. This would be amazing news for me and my husband. I do want to someday have children, so this day will come for me. I do hope however, that it comes when I am ready and have been actually trying to have kids. Of course, things will work out when the Great One above wants them to.

January 17th – Rest
Do you have a weekly day of rest? Write a bit about this concept.

Ah, a day of rest, that’s the life, eh? When I hear this phrase, thoughts of palm trees and sunny afternoons by the pool cross my mind. Alas, that is just a stereotypical scene. Just like a vacation, it is a vision of what we hope said day or days would be like.
Realistically, a day of rest for me does occur. I tend to utilize most of my weekends for rest. I try to mentally and physically allow my body to relax during that time as much as possible. Even a few hours of rest feels great. For me, an afternoon where I can be out with my camera taking pictures or writing in a quiet place is relaxing and enjoyable.

Couch 2 5k – Day 2

Today’s training was easier than day one. I woke up this morning at 7am so that I could eat breakfast and then get the C25k training in before I had to get ready for work.

Again, I’m using the C25k podcast from Robert Ullrey which is great for helping not only keep you motivated, but for knowing when it is time to run. You can easily use your own timing/watch to do this, but having someone else do it for you helps keep the concentration on the actual workout.

The first four intervals of running came fairly easy which felt good. I did notice that my right thigh is getting the brunt of any soreness from the workouts. Not sure if it’s because I am pushing more on that leg or what. So, I worked to even my balance out as much as I could as I ran. Also, I tried to keep as lose as possible when I was running. This seemed to help a lot.

Before I knew it, I was down to the last two running intervals. The running itself is not easier per say, just how I am feeling during the workout compared to day one. I feel like my body is gradually realizing that it has the endurance and strength to do this. I know I am definitely ready for the challenge and won’t be giving up. I found myself mentally encouraging myself during the workouts as well. I kept repeating, “you can do it!” Mental encouragement helps a lot during a physical challenge, you need to believe you can do it and you will do it.

Signs

I am a Christian and a firm believer in God. While I have not been going to church as I should be lately, I have always believed that God provides us with signs for life’s journey. Whether it be something small or large, they are there right in front of us. It is just up to you to see them.

This has been the case for me recently. I have been going through some down times and feeling lost. Even wondering at times if I was aspiring for the right thing in wanting to move back to Western North Carolina. The Great One above has been giving me signs, especially the last few days that I am on the right track in wanting to be back in Asheville. Just in the last couple of days, I have seen license plates or something related to North Carolina during moments of sadness/frustration. Such a great and amazing thing. I have to smile and my spirits lift a bit when these signs come along. God’s greatness surrounds us, even during times we feel lost and without support. We all need to remember that.

C25k Week 1: Day One

Just completed the first day of the couch 2 5k training plan and I was surprised at how difficult it was for me to run those 60 second intervals. A few months ago, they would have been a piece of cake. During the workout, I thought about why it was tiring me out so much. Then, it came to me, I have been slacking with my general workouts the last couple of months due to my work schedule and the cold. My body has gotten a bit lax and not used to pushing itself quite so much as of late.

So, I am going to do the C25k training on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and then do other workouts on Sundays and Thursdays (might change Thursdays up with Tuesdays or Fridays). I am hoping this will help build my endurance back up. I feel like my body is getting lazy again and I definitely don’t want that to happen. So, back to working out 5 days a week it is.

Going to make sure to blog about the highs and lows of my training, as I feel like it is important for me to not only make a note of it, but writing always helps keep me encouraged and motivated. Also, it might help someone else get a pinch of motivation or encouragement if they happen to stumble on my blog. You just never know. 🙂

The start of C25k!

I will be starting my C25k training tomorrow morning. Looking forward to the training and to getting back outside to regularly workout again now that the weather is getting warmer again.

Updates on my progress will be posted here on my blog for anyone interested in following along with my progress. My current goal is to run the Corporate 5k here in Orlando in April.

January 14th – Odds

One-Minute Writer Prompt:
In what way have you beat the odds?

I’d have to say I’ve beat the odds in regards to my health. Just over a year ago, I was obese and completely unhealthy. I never truly felt good or well. It was a miserable way to be living. Finally, I decided to change that. I not only started regularly working out, but I ate healthier and less.

The odds I beat was getting an illness like diabetes and/or shortening my life. I don’t know the numbers that I was up against, but I know that I have prolonged my life by getting healthy and dropping over 70lbs. Feels great to know that I accomplished this for myself.

1930s New York through the lens

Was recommended this set of photography of New York in the 1930s. These are some amazing black & white pictures that I am in love with. I love old black & white photography, especially depicting life as it used to be. There’s just something so inspiring and beautiful about old photos.

Beating those winter blues

So, I have been struggling with my mood the last few days… while life isn’t a bowl of cherries (who has a life like that?), it sure isn’t horrible. However, the winter blues can make you feel like everything is depressing and all you want to do is absolutely nothing.

I am working to fight and get over this seasonal issue, as thankfully, the cold snap that has overcome Florida seems to be taking a hike within the next day or two. Trying to get myself back into regular workouts will definitely help me a lot. Today, I went out and did a twenty minute brisk walk which felt great. Yes, it was still cold and windy, but I forced myself to get outside and take in the fresh air.

This disorder (known as Seasonal Affective Disorder) normally affects those in the northern states where winter is more harsh. However, this winter has been anything but ordinary for every state in the country. That said, I am not surprised that my body has been experiencing it. Going to make sure that it doesn’t win though, as I have worked hard to not only get healthy and fit, but to mentally relax and feel good. So, these blues aren’t going to get the better of me. Not saying it is an easy thing to get over or what have you, but there are ways to do it.

One Minute Writer: Cold

One Minute Writer Prompt:
Parts of America have been experiencing record-breaking low temperatures. Think of a product you could invent to help people stay warm.

Oh yes, the weather has been crazy cold, even down here in Florida. We have even been into the 20s overnight and in the early morning hours. This weather is the kind of temps that would be experienced further north in say South Carolina or North Carolina.

If I could create a product that would help people stay warm is a cross between a snuggie and gloves. Something that you would still be able to put your arms through yet it keeps your hands warm while easily accessible for writing and such. Maybe a snuggie with gloves that are attachable/detachable. Of course, you could just put your own gloves on, but if these two things came in a package deal, it would be much better.

Another good idea for keeping warm are warm shoes with heaters in them. Of course, you would have to be able to somehow adjust just how warm the heat is in the shoes. Maybe they would come with a wireless remote of some sort that is small enough to put in your pocket.

Just a couple ideas, as I know I not only get cold easily, but my hands and feet get especially freezing cold this time of the year when the temps are this low.

Weekend comes and it goes…

Well, it’s the end of the weekend…this point always seems to come too soon for my taste. I would love just another day to sleep in and take it easy while not having to get to work to punch the clock. It always goes by way too quickly.

As far as this weekend itself, I ended up failing in two things I wanted to get accomplished/done. One, is finishing Jack Kerouac’s book, On the Road that I started reading the previous Sunday evening. I had hoped and planned to finish by the end of the weekend. Alas, I still have over 100 pages to go. The second thing is finding and purchasing a winter coat. I searched for hours on Saturday and part of Sunday to no avail. Seems that whatever coats there were in Orlando have been scooped up by others due to the very cold temps we have been experiencing here. I guess I will just have to order something online or simply wait until the Fall and buy one when I am back in Asheville.

On a nice note, I did get some aromatherapy lotions from Bath & Body Works over the weekend. I have really been enjoying the stress relief lotion I bought a few weeks ago and was glad to get a hold of some more during a sale the store was holding. Also, I had an always enjoyable lunch on Saturday at Dandelion Cafe. I hadn’t been up to the cafe since right before Christmas, so it was nice to have a great vegan meal there again.
