One Minute Writer: Cold

One Minute Writer Prompt:
Parts of America have been experiencing record-breaking low temperatures. Think of a product you could invent to help people stay warm.

Oh yes, the weather has been crazy cold, even down here in Florida. We have even been into the 20s overnight and in the early morning hours. This weather is the kind of temps that would be experienced further north in say South Carolina or North Carolina.

If I could create a product that would help people stay warm is a cross between a snuggie and gloves. Something that you would still be able to put your arms through yet it keeps your hands warm while easily accessible for writing and such. Maybe a snuggie with gloves that are attachable/detachable. Of course, you could just put your own gloves on, but if these two things came in a package deal, it would be much better.

Another good idea for keeping warm are warm shoes with heaters in them. Of course, you would have to be able to somehow adjust just how warm the heat is in the shoes. Maybe they would come with a wireless remote of some sort that is small enough to put in your pocket.

Just a couple ideas, as I know I not only get cold easily, but my hands and feet get especially freezing cold this time of the year when the temps are this low.

Weekend comes and it goes…

Well, it’s the end of the weekend…this point always seems to come too soon for my taste. I would love just another day to sleep in and take it easy while not having to get to work to punch the clock. It always goes by way too quickly.

As far as this weekend itself, I ended up failing in two things I wanted to get accomplished/done. One, is finishing Jack Kerouac’s book, On the Road that I started reading the previous Sunday evening. I had hoped and planned to finish by the end of the weekend. Alas, I still have over 100 pages to go. The second thing is finding and purchasing a winter coat. I searched for hours on Saturday and part of Sunday to no avail. Seems that whatever coats there were in Orlando have been scooped up by others due to the very cold temps we have been experiencing here. I guess I will just have to order something online or simply wait until the Fall and buy one when I am back in Asheville.

On a nice note, I did get some aromatherapy lotions from Bath & Body Works over the weekend. I have really been enjoying the stress relief lotion I bought a few weeks ago and was glad to get a hold of some more during a sale the store was holding. Also, I had an always enjoyable lunch on Saturday at Dandelion Cafe. I hadn’t been up to the cafe since right before Christmas, so it was nice to have a great vegan meal there again.

Relaxation is who you are

From THE MINDFULIST :
“Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.”
Chinese proverb

This makes me think about how I have been trying to be of a relaxed mind as of late. I believe that if you believe you are relaxed and happy than your life will reflect this attitude. It’s all about believing and being. I now daily work to keep myself calm and not let things bother me. It’s a mentality that I enter each day with. I have learned that it is not worth letting life’s little annoyances and what have you pull you down. Relax and let them float by.

January 8th – Friday Fiction

One-Minute Writer Prompt:
Fable. Write an original fable.

Once upon a time in a small apartment there was a digital camera. He was a beautiful camera, with a black body and a lens with all the bells and whistles. When he was out with his photographer friend, he was happy, he loved seeing the outside world with the short blonde girl who held him so securely and with much care. However, when she did not take him out, he found himself to be very lonely. He longed for another camera to spend his non-shooting days along side.

One day, the digital camera discovered that the photo girl had left the bag he lived in unzipped. Light from the outside world was now peering into the darkness he knew and he was curious. The camera wanted to see just what was out there on his own. He knew that he would have to get out of the bag to explore, to find out just what was out there in order to get over his loneliness.

After moving himself from his seated position in the padded bag, he pushed the cover of the bag. Suddenly, light overtook him in all it’s glory. He was now seeing the world that existed outside of that bag. It was wonderful he thought to himself. Seeing all of this greatness made the camera very happy and he knew that his lonely days were a thing of the past. Jumping out of the confines of the bag, he slowly but surely wandered along the shelf in the closet he found himself upon. The camera then spotted another bag very much like his own nearby. Was this another camera? He had to know.

Approaching the other bag, the camera called out, “hello? hello? is anyone in there?” In response to his calling out, the camera heard rustling from inside the mystery bag. The camera’s lens widened to it’s fulled f-stop. There really was someone inside! The camera could barely contain his excitement. Camera swallowed hard and continued, “it is alright, I too am a camera…please do not be afraid. I just want to be friends.”

Suddenly, the second bag’s cover whooshed open and there she was, another camera. The second camera was out of her bag almost instantaneously, as if she had some sort of magical power. Before the digital camera knew it, there she was, just inches away from him. “why hello handsome, I have been wondering who was in that new bag. Alas, my fear had gotten the better of me and I never dared to find out.”

(The moral of the story is we shouldn’t be fearful about discovering new friends and new experiences in life. Go out, explore the world around you.)

Long first week of the year

What a crazy, busy week! It has been hectic at work. I already can’t wait for some slow days to come. From what my co-workers tell me, it won’t slow down until about mid-February where I work. *sigh* I still hope that somehow, it will come earlier than that. My stress levels are threatening to go up and I’ve been trying to keep calm and not let much bother me…here’s to a speedy Friday at work tomorrow and a speedy rest of the month of January!

Couch to 5k

I have decided to start the Couch to 5k Running training (otherwise known as C25K) once the weather warms up. In fairness, I did attempt this last year, but didn’t make it through to the end. When I go out for walks, I already do some running, so I think it will be easier now. Of course, it won’t be “easy,” but easier. I want to push myself to do it, as my ultimate goal is to run a full 5k later this year before I move back up to Asheville.

As for the date I will begin the training, I am going to guess in about a week and a half, since the cold weather appears to be sticking around for at least another week here in the normally sunny Central Florida. I will update my blog when I start and throughout the training.

Baby, it's cold outside!

Crazy and utterly insane temperatures here in Central Florida this winter. It has dipped into the 20s during the nights and early mornings the last few days. The days have been in the 30s to 50s tops. While I enjoy the cooler weather, the 20s and 30s are definitely not the temps I like at all. Now, if it was in the 50s and 60s, that would be another story…of course, unless that darn wind chill was making it feel like it was even colder.

To keep warm during these cold days, I have been going with lots of layers and hot tea. I already have been loving a good cup of tea and now more than ever do I appreciate how great it is to have a hot cup to warm you up in the morning.

January 4th – Date

One-Minute Writer Daily Prompt:
Write about a day of the year that is important to you personally (not a holiday or birthday.)

Here is the utter truth of the matter, I love Fridays now more than ever. Now that I only work on every fifth Saturday, Fridays are my favorite days since I know the weekend is right there waiting. There is nothing like that feeling you get when it’s time to punch out for the last time that week and have the next two days free of the workplace, it is a feeling of excitement.

I realize that I sort of took this prompt in a bit of a difference direction. To single out one day of the year less for holidays/birthdays that is important to me right now is almost impossible. As, a day for me other than holidays does not exist. Yes, I’m sure if I really racked my brain I’d come up with something, but nothing came to mind for me when I saw this prompt. Seeing as how the prompt response is supposed to be written within 60 seconds, that’s what I came up with. 🙂

This blog post is in response to The One-Minute Writer daily prompt.

On the Road

I wanted to start with Breakfast of Champions, but couldn’t find it in stock at the bookstore Saturday and unfortunately, the local library doesn’t seem to have this book at any of it’s branches. So, I decided to start my first book read of 2010 with Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Oddly enough, I have never read any of the author’s work. I have heard great things, just never took the time to check out any of his books.

Reading update

So, I have not been doing well in reading my Sherlock Holmes book…don’t get me wrong, it’s a great book, I just have been very mentally scattered and busy with the holidays. No more excuses though, the holiday insanity is over (even though we are going to be very slammed at work for the next 6 weeks) and I need to settle down and read daily. Decided that while I want to get through Sherlock Holmes, I am going to try reading another book first that is not filled with short stories and is rather one complete novel. Which one am I going to start with from my list? I am allowing myself the day to decide upon that. There are some great novelists on my list and while I am out today, the bookstore will beckon me. More on the decision later…. 🙂
