I am excited to announce that I was selected to return as an Ambassador for the 26.2 with DONNA. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this amazing cause and event weekend. While at the heard of the 26.2 with DONNA, it’s a marathon and half marathon race weekend, there is SO much more to the event that seeks to finish breast cancer.
At the center of the organization is Donna Deegan, she is the heart of it all. The race was founded by Donna along with friend, Jeff Galloway in 2008 in order to fund breast cancer cure research and support The Donna Foundation which helps survivors of the disease. Donna Deegan is a three-time breast cancer survivor and former news anchor for First Coast News in Jacksonville. The Donna Foundation was founded by Donna in 2003 and has helped over 7,000 local under-served women as well as raised over $2 million for the organization.
The Mayo Clinic was able to establish the Breast Cancer Translational Genomics Program with the over $1.2 million in contributions through the 26.2 with DONNA. The program is lead by one of the top breast cancer researchers in the world, Dr. Edith Perez, M.D. The work that the Mayo Clinic has been able to accomplish has been quite amazing. Researchers have identified and validated 56 gene mutations never before identified in the setting of breast cancer. They are working with genome information with a template the group created which may help provide meaningful clues into individualizing aspects of breast cancer care such as diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
Bottom line is, the work that is able to be funded through the 26.2 with DONNA event has been able to already make great strides in finding a cure for breast cancer. Every single person’s contribution to the DONNA means everything, and I just know that through this research the Mayo Clinic has been able to do, we will be able to finish it one day soon.
It’s a blessing to be able to share the excitement of the 26.2 with DONNA with everyone. I love talking about not only the awesome race itself (hey, I am a runner after all), but how everything; every penny of registrations and donations to DONNA goes to fund breast cancer research and to the Donna Foundation. Not even a penny of the money you give to the race goes to anything but to the cause represented. No other race is like the 26.2 with DONNA. 70% of the money goes to research and 30% to the Donna Foundation.
If you have any questions about the 26.2 with DONNA, or The Donna Foundation, please feel free to drop me an email. The race weekend is definitely one you do NOT want to miss. Jacksonville really comes out and paints the city pink, and you couldn’t ask for more awesome spectators! If you aren’t running in 2015, please consider donating to the cause through the link below. The site is secure and you’re donation is completely tax deductible. Thank you, and I hope to see some fellow runners at the February race!
