With the holiday season around the corner, I’ve been thinking about how I can give back to others this season. There are so many organizations out there that help the less fortunate, and I believe that taking some time out of our busy lives is important. We may not be well off (far from it), but we need to appreciate what we have in life and be willing to lend a helping hand when it’s needed. I may not be able to give financially to the charities and groups that I’d like, but I can volunteer my time.
There are all sorts of groups that would love for you and me to just offer a couple of hours of our days off to their cause. Already, I have heard about opportunities through my church as well as my community. If you just take a few minutes to look, you can find them. For example:
-Feeding the homeless at the local soup kitchen
-Wrapping gifts for a local charity
-Toy drive at the office
-Adopt a child for Christmas (many programs for this)
-Donate/help with a food drive
-Deliver meals to seniors with a Meals on Wheels program
-Blanket drive (collect/donate for the winter months)
-Pack holidays baskets for needy families
Those are just some of the ways we can get out and help others during this holiday season. I know I feel blessed to be able to have a roof over my head, food in my cupboards and be able to drive to and from where I need to go. Sometimes, we don’t stop to think that others don’t have those things in their lives. Helping others makes everyone happy, I know it makes my heart smile.
