On Friday, January 8th I was invited to a blogger event put on by Cigna at Disney’s EPCOT Center. The event was being put on in corporation with the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend. Cigna is the title sponsor of Marathon Weekend at Walt Disney World. Cigna’s mission is to help the people they serve improve their health, well-being and sense of security. During the WDW Marathon weekend, Cigna is actively involved during the expo providing runners and other attendees with information and activities to help improve their health well-being.
At the blogger meet-up, we got to take part in a Know Your Health game show. The fun consisted of trivia, dancing, yoga poses, and other physical activities with a team of other bloggers. It was all about mixing fun with health and fitness. We came out of the event having learned more about health than we did coming into the event.
Cigna Health Coach Nicolas Tolentino gave us the facts of a recent survey Cigna conducted of insured adults. An astounding 45% of Americans say that they don’t know they should have an annual check-up. Furthermore, half of them are unaware that with insurance, there is no cost for the check-up. An annual check-up is important to our personal health, as they provide us with the opportunity to check on our vital health numbers like Body Mass Index (BMI), cholesterol and blood pressure.
We need to know our numbers in order to take care of our health. According to Cigna’s survey, 66% of adults are either overweight or obese, but yet only 18% realize it enough to get on a weight-loss plan. Having a BMI of greater than 30 can lead to an increased cost of $2,460 in health care costs each year. Not to mention the numerous health benefits of weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight such as avoiding diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.
With 2016 just starting, now is the time to get on a healthy journey if you aren’t already on one. It’s extremely important to prioritize our health. Cigna has some great tips and information to help you on their website. Be sure to check it out, there is a lot of great stuff on the site!
